ladies and gentlemen, this is joe biden, i'm filling in for president obama, while he addresses the nato summit in wales.

when the president and i took office in january of , this nation was in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the great depression. our economy had plummeted1 at a rate of 8% in a single quarter-part of the fastest economic decline any time in the last half century. millions of families were falling underwater on their homes and threatened with foreclosure. the iconic american automobile2 industry was under siege.

but yesterday's jobs report was another reminder3 of how far we've come. we've had 54 straight months of job creation. and that's the longest streak4 of uninterrupted job growth in the united states' history.

we've gone from losing 9 million jobs during the financial crisis to creating 10 million jobs. we've reduced the unemployment rate from 10% in october of to 6.1% today. and for the first time since the 1990s, american manufacturing is steadily5 adding jobs-over 700,000 since . and surveys of both american and foreign business leaders confirm that america once again is viewed as the best place in the world to build and invest.

that's all good news.

but an awful lot of middle class americans are still not feeling the effects of this recovery. since the year , gross domestic product-our gdp – has risen by 25%. and productivity in america is up by 30%. but middle class wages during that same time period have gone up by only fourteen cents.

folks, it's long past time to cut the middle class back into the deal, so they can benefit from the economic growth they helped create. folks, there used to be a bargain in this country supported by democrats6 and republicans, business and labor7. the bargain was simple. if an employee contributed to the growth and profitability of the company, they got to share in the profits and the benefits as well. that's what built the middle class. it's time to restore the bargain, to deal the middle class back in. because, folks, when the middle class does well, everybody does well-the wealthy get wealthier and the poor have a way up.

you know, the middle class is not a number. it's a value set. it means being able to own your home; raise your children in a safe neighborhood; send them to a good school where if they do well they can qualify to go to college and if they get accepted you'd be able to find a way to be able to send them to college. and in the meantime, if your parents need help, being able to take care of them, and hope to put aside enough money so that your children will not have to take care of you.

that's the american dream. that's what this country was built on. and that's what we'redetermined8 to restore.

in order to do that, it's time to have a fair tax structure, one that values paychecks as much as unearned income and inherited wealth, to take some of the burden off of the middle class. it's time to close tax loopholes so we can reduce the deficit9, and invest in rebuilding america – our bridges, our ports, our highways, rails, providing good jobs.

with corporate10 profits at near record highs, we should encourage corporations to invest more in research and development and the salaries of their employees. it's time for us to invest in educational opportunity to guarantee that we have the most highly skilledworkforce11 in the world, for 6 out of every 10 jobs in the near term is going to require some education beyond high school. folks, it's long past due to increase the minimum wage that will lift millions of hardworking families out of poverty target poverty and in the process produce a ripple12 effect that boosts wages for the middle class and spurs economic growth for the united states of america. economists13 acknowledge that if we do these and other things, wages will go up and we'll increase the gross domestic product of the united states.

my fellow americans, we know how to do this. we've done it before. it's the way we used to do business and we can do it that way again. all the middle class in this country want is a chance. no guarantee, just a chance.

americans want to work. and when given a fair shot, the american worker has never, ever, ever, let his country down. folks, it's never a good bet to bet against the american people.

thanks for listening.

ladies and gentlemen, good morning!

i’m very glad to stand here and give you a short speech.

today, i want to celebrate the life of the man who brought modern medicine to china, who fought the manchurian([mnturin]n.

鼠疫; 灾害; 折磨vt;使痛苦,造成麻烦), and who set the standard for generations of doctors to follow.

dr. wu liande was a malayan-born chinese in 10 march 1879 and the first medical student of chinese descent to study at university of cambridge. he was also the first malaysian chinese nominated to receive a nobel prize in medicine in 1935.

he was born in penang, one of the three towns of the straits settlements.

he was admitted to emmanuel([imnjul]) college, cambridge in 1896, after winning the queen’s scholarship held in singapore. he had a successful career at university, and won virtually all the available prizes and scholarships. his undergraduate clinical years were spent at st mary’s hospital, london.

wu liande had two wives in his life. the first one was huang shuqiong, who was endowed with both beauty and talent, but died of tuberculosis in 1937.[tju:

b:kjulss]

the second one was li shuzhen ,who was healthy and gave birth to three daughters and two sons for wu liande

his two wives had never met, but been maintaining the relationship of harmony and mutual respect.

in the winter of 1910, dr. wu lien-teh was given instructions from the foreign office, peking, to travel to harbin to investigate an unknown disease which killed 99.9% of its victims.

this turned out to be the beginning of the large pneumonic pandemic of manchuria([mnturi]n. 蒙古) which ultimately claimed 60,000 victims.

dr. wu would be remembered for his role in asking for imperial([mpril] adj.

批准;鼓励,容忍) to cremate([krmet]vt.火葬,火化;烧成灰) plague victims, as cremation of these infected victims turned out to be the turning point of the epidemic([epdemk] n.

流行性的;极为盛行的). the suppression of this plague pandemic changed medical progress in china.

this is burning scene at that time.

to burn out the potential infectious sources

in order to control the infection, patient-approached furniture, daily necessities([n'sestz]) and so on must been burned

this is called wu's mask, which was invented by wu liande during the fight against the plague.

in april 1911, dr. wu chaired the international plague conference in mukden([mukdn] n.奉天(沈阳的旧称)) , a historic([hstrk]) event attended by scientists from the united states of america, great britain, france, germany, italy(['tl] n.

(1917年以前的)俄罗斯帝国;现俄罗斯;俄罗斯联邦), mexico and china. he later presented a plague research ***** at the international congress of medicine, london in august 1913, which was published in the lancet in the same month. dr.

wu was the first president of the china medical association (1916–1920) and directed the national quarantine( [kwrnti:n] n.

this is the scene at the time of the meeting.

these are the representatives attending the meeting and wu liande.

this is his thesis published in lancet

in 1937, with the japanese occupation of much of china and the retreat of the nationalists, dr. wu moved back to malaya where he worked as a general practitioner in ipoh. to encourage the young to share his love for reading, dr.

wu tirelessly collected donations to start the perak library in ipoh, a free lending public library. in his own medical practice at 12 brewster road, long queues were a ***mon sight, and he was known as the doctor who gave free consultation and treatment to the poor. he practised medicine until the age of 80, when he bought a new house in penang for his retirement.

he died on 21 january 1960, aged 81.

dr. wu lien-teh is regarded as the first person to modernize china’s medical services and medical education.

liang qichao looked back 50 year history from the late qing dynasty to the republic of china, then issued such a sigh: " fifty years since the introduction of science, it’s just been dr. wu lien-teh that has gained a world reputation as a scholar in our country!

"in order to ***memorate the great medical scientists, wu liande memorial hall, sponsored by harbin medical university, undertaken by first affiliated hospital of harbin medical university, held the foundation stone laying ceremony during the celebration of 80th anniversary of harbin medical university, in september 8, 2006.

this is the ***pleted memorial.

although dr. wu lien teh has gone away from us, but his scholarliness and patrioti** will live forever in the hearts of the people.

i’m very glad to say something here. today, my topic is -----i wish.

every person has many beautiful dreams, so do i.

i wish that i have a good friend who has magic power like多啦a梦. he could give me anything which i want, such as maliang’s paintbrush.

i wish i could use it to help others. such as i could draw the coats for the poor men when it’s cold, i could draw the food for them when they’re hungry, and i could draw a house for them, too.

i wish that my dream will xxe true someday.

thank you.

we've all been taught that we should help people. it is the right thing to do and will make us popular with others. it may even win us favors in return.

however, we must be realistic. we can't say yes to every request. if we did, we would fail or go crazy for sure.

sometimes we simply don't have the time to help. in this case, we must know how to say no politely.

when we need to say no, here is one method we can try. first, we should tell the truth. if we really can't do something, we should just say so.

second, we should remember to refuse requests politely. we must xxmunicate clearly, but must also be sincere and sympathetic. a true friend will understand.

finally, we must not feel guilty about saying no. sometimes refusing others is the right thing to do. it can save ourselves, and them, a lot of trouble.

in short, we cannot please everyone all the time. refusing favors is a part of life.

at newborn registration day, facing the strange environment, parents have chosen to kept ***pany all day long. and now more and more universities issued a ban on parents,to strive to give students the first lesson on self-reliance.

in order to teach in***ing freshmen their first lesson in independence, tsinghua university set up a “parents-restricted” area this year where students have to go through the enrollment procedure all by themselves.为了能够给新生们上好自力更生的第一课,清华大学今年设立了一个“家长止步区”,学生们必须独自办理入学手续it is like the national entrance exam all over again. last week on the tsinghua university campus, parents anxiously watched their children head off into a taped area to register as freshmen.

(具体例子) “don’t worry mum, i can manage,” said xia yanxu, 18, a freshman from hebei province, reassuring his mother that he would be alright handling the photoshoot for his student id and the hukou registration.“妈,别担心,我能行,”来自河北的新生,18岁的夏延旭(音译)安慰妈妈,表示自己会去搞定拍学生证**以及户口登记等事项。xia’s mother did not ***e alone, but with grandparents and other family members.

other than proudly witnessing her son stepping into one of the country’s most prestigious institutions, li xiaoping came to beijing to assist with any unforeseeable problems that her son might face.

“from his childhood through to high school, xia was told only to worry about study, and that we [parents] would take care of everything else,” said li. “if anything happens i fear he might be overwhelmed and make the wrong decision.”

”xia’s parents are in good ***pany. on the first enrollment day the number of parents exceeded that of enrolling students, according to a school official.

“over the years the number of parents has increased,” said the official, who asked to remain anonymous. “that’s one reason why the school set up the student-only area – to prevent chaos.

in fact, tsinghua is not the only university in trying to teach freshmen independence. this year, shanghai university cancelled the tradition of upper-clas**en picking up freshmen from the train station. instead, the school attached with its offer letters a transportation map of the city on which the 5,963 freshmen could find the campus by public transport.

the change has been well received.

***pared with china, let us look at the situation of foreign countries. in this situation, china and foreigncountries have sth in country.

in order to separate doting parents from their freshman sons, morehouse college in atlanta has instituted a formal “parting ceremony.”为了将那些溺爱孩子的父母与刚升上大学的子女分开,美国亚特兰大的莫尔豪斯学院特地举办了一个正式的分别仪式.at the end of the period of the speech, the in***ing freshmen marched through the gates of the campus — which swung shut, literally leaving the parents outside.

a more ***mon approach is for colleges to introduce blunt language into drop-off schedules specifying the hour for last hugs. as of 5:30 p.

m. on sept. 11, for example, the parents of princeton freshmen learn from the move-in schedule, “subsequent orientation events are intended for students only.

the language was added in recent years to draw a clear line. it’s easy for students to point to this notation and say “hey, mom, i think you’re supposed to be gone now”.

actually, whether it is ac***panied with their parents to go to school or friends go hand in hand,or even go to university by themselves alone,it is the first step to university life. independent in the face of the new life, taking this step is sooner or later.

let's explore the recent hot issues(最近发生的热点事件)

freshmen to report to the school just a few days and found that the schools are not so good imagination ,and results to the school a few days later required to withdraw. this caused inter*** users’ great denouncing ,more users "sigh”, relative than his former environment, now the students do not know how to cherish.

the dream is plump but the reality is skinny. university freshmen had just experienced a tension high school, often filled with longing of college life, which was separated from the "liberation" of 12 years of schooling, the university is absolutely free paradise.

for new arrivals, producing the “ideal gap”to the new environmentis normal. but it is not advisable to quit但初到异地,对新环境产生“理想落差”也很正常,但因此而退学实在不可取.

don’t be penny wise and pound foolish. being educated in the university should not be over-pursuit of superior environment.

, as a student should put all our heart into our studies.

since we’ve been regarded as the pioneer entered the university , should have the ability to live independently. so we are supposed to give our students a bit of advice.share your advice with us.

dumpling is a traditional chinese food. On the lunar new year' s day most families make a lot of delicious dumplings. To make them follow this easy process.

The first step is to mix the flour with water. when the dough is ready we can begin to make dumpling wrappers. we use a rolling pole to roll the dough into small thin and round pieces so that they will be easy to cook. when the wrappers are done it' s time to prepare the filling. Usually we use meat such as beef or mutton and some vegetables such as cabbage or carrots for may actually choose whatever you like to put into it. we must chop those things into small put some salt oil and other condiments into it and stir it evenly. When all these preparations are done we can start making dumplings. First put a spoonful of filling in the center of the wrapper. Then stick the two opposite sides together and then the rest. Don' t just cover the filling with the wrappers. The best shape of dumplings is that of a ship because when they are boiling in the pan they look like ships sailing in the sea. The smell can make your mouth water.
